DR from Belgium to South Africa
DR from Belgium to South Africa
hello,
i'm from belgium and i found this dr forum. For me it is very interesting but i don't onderstand german.
I'm planning a trip from brussels to South-africa and for this 30.000 km long trip i need a wonderfull bike. We choosed the DR because of its reliability and his strongnes. Now i am searching the internet for Dr's and i find DR 650's (1600 euro, 1993 with 15.000km) and also DR 600's (750 euro, from 1987 with 8000km)
Do any one of you know if the DR 600 is as good as the 650? Or is it better to buy a newer DR?

Hi franzseb,
for traveling such a distance - I would prefer of course an e-start-bike.
The older versions of the DR are equipped with kickstarter. E-start bikes are:
- DR 650 RSE
- DR 650 RE
- DR 650 SE
See the images here. The SE is the last modell. Here in germany it was resaled within the year 1997 - as far as I know.
From all the post I read along here in this forum - I would take the SE. But there are also people who are traveling with older modells.
Best regards & welcome on board

... gone fishing ...
You really should go for the SE Modell. Compared to the older model it is arround 20 KG lighter. Thats a lot, probably 2/3 of you luggage.
The rear frame is quite strong, so luggage is not a problem.
The engine runs smooth, so you can do long distances without your hands shaking from vibrations.
Problem is: it is a little bit hard to get.
Beware of the 98 modell, this modell has a problem with the starting unit (but it can be fixed).
Upgrade of the suspension (rear and front) is advisable for such a long trip.
have fun
