dr 650 se problem
dr 650 se problem
good evening to all. my name is federico and I've a big probleme to my dr (I as soon as retourne from a trip in libya: 6000 km whith my dr 650: an animol of desert). now, when I start the motor the collector becams red fire. I thougt that the valves were strong: no, there is compression. and so the fase is corect. what is for them? thank you. federico. rome. italy
Hi Federico,
Maybe the air/gasoline mixture is to poor. Caused by dirt in the jets or the fuel filters.
That makes higher temperatures.
Have a look into the carburetor and clean the fuelfilters.
The main- and the idle jet you can clean by compressed air, also the fuel filters.
There is one in the fuel tank and the in the spigot where the fuel hose is attached to the carburetor.
Also check the valve clearance even if there is compression. Intake .10 mm, outlet .2 mm.
After that distance the maintenance is required anyway.

Absolutly unusual with the SE.
The only thing I can imagine to change the ignition timing is, if the magneto
comes loose and turns a bit on the crankshaft.
So seen at a Husqvarna WR360 (wegde was sheered). Don't know if possible with a DR.
But if it runs with the usual power, it can't be the timing.
Sometimes you can find preignition caused by oil coal in the cylinderhead. It increases the compression and if it glows, it will inflame the gas too early.
Mostly high temperature is caused by poor fuel/air mix. Have you had a look onto the sparkplugs?
They should be light grey / beige. If white = to hot = poor mix. (Black = too rich, too cold.)
Edit: Can you check for the level in the carburetors swimmer chamber.
You can do with a transparent hose (clear PVC or the like) pop it onto the
drain spigot, hold it upwards and open the drain screw.
The fuel level should be 14.7 mm +/-1 (I am not sure, but here are some
experts in the forum who knows exactly) under the splitline.
That can be adjusted by bending the metal tongue of the swimmer slightly.
Seen a car runnig poor caused by a loosen swimmer valve. It turned out a little bit and closed to early by this.

Hi federico,
welcome to our forum. May I invite you to our yearly DR-650 Meeting, this year from the 29th to 31st August in Southern Germany near a small town called Noerdlingen. We will have the possibility to show photos via Beamer and sure many of us want to hear about your trip to Libya. And, of course, we could call it "International DR-650 Meeting" then
I know, it's a long way to come, but sure it will be fun like hell!
Cheers, Stefan
